If you’re like most people you have travel plans this summer for some much needed vacation time. Its good to get away from work, your never ending to-do list, meetings and just the everyday hustle of life! But never take a vacation from your healthy eating habits and regular workout routine. Its ok to pull back the reigns while on vacation- I do! Maybe you’ll workout less frequently or not as hard as you usually do or have cocktail here and there or indulge in something you don’t typically eat, but its important to not veer too far away from your typical diet & exercise regimen. There are physical and mental ramifications from not working out for a week or so. Not only is it mentally hard to get yourself back in the game and into a routine again but you’ll lose muscle mass and gain fat which is not good news for anybody no matter who you are!
According to Howard G. Knuttgen, PhD., a senior lecturer at Harvard University, a decline in performance and muscle size happens after as little as 1-2 weeks of not exercising. Muscle strength will continue to decrease with no stimulation, and body composition will be altered with more body fat and less muscle. Even two days of inactivity can negatively impact insulin sensitivity as shown in a 2012 study from the Journal of the Physiological Society.
Make diet and exercise decisions while on vacation based on how you feel. The days that you’re less active, eat less and if you know you’re going to have some cocktails or are anticipating eating a lot of food that day then workout that morning before all the indulging begins. Just keep a balance between what you’re eating and your activity level and you’ll be able to maintain your healthy lifestyle anywhere you go.
If you wake up with that swollen, groggy, heavy feeling one morning then take that as a sign that you went a bit overboard (hard not to with sun, water, salty snacks & sugary drinks are all mixed together!). Its ok! Its a new day so workout and make sure you SWEAT! Then eat light and hydrate until you get your appetite back and feel light on your feet again.
So, lets talk specifics. Here are some of my favorite beach snacks, meals and workouts too. They are simple suggestions that you’re familiar with but when it comes to snacking on the beach, I find that the staples work best. All the food is easy to pack up in a cooler- I just did it when I wen to Folly Beach, SC last weekend!
